Provide Basic Emergency Care (Previously known as Pre-Hospital Emergency Care PHEC)

An advanced, progressive and innovative course, Provide Basic Emergency Care provides you with the skills and knowledge required to provide immediate and advanced first aid assistance. This course involves management and provision of Advanced First Aid, not limited to, but including: Airway management, including providing Oxygen, Transportation of casualties ( Back board and Splint Strecher) observations, such as BP, O2 Saturation, Temp, Pulse, use of AED with CPR and Multiple casualty scenarios. This course is ideal for individuals or small groups who want to learn first aid and gain higher level first aid skills and knowledge, such as Surf Life Savers, Pool Life Guards, Nursing or the Health industry, if you work in isolation or in remote areas such as fishing boats/marine personal, Mountain Patrollers, Ski Instructors, Search and Rescue, Adventure Tourism, expedition to Antarctica, Fire Fighters and much more. If you have a larger group, we can arrange a course just for you at your premises or ours.

Course time

2 days (16 hours course learning)

Course specifics

You will be shown how to best prepare a patient presenting with illnesses and injuries which prevent the patient from transporting themselves and how to apply techniques to lift and move a patient, with stretchers and positioning for transporting a patient to definitive care.With much of the course being hands on, the focus is on you developing confidence and competency in recognition of patients that may require any of the following support:

  • Scene assessment / management
  • Patient assessment
  • Using adjunct airways
  • Bag/mask resuscitator
  • Defibrillation
  • Trauma conditions
  • Medical conditions
  • Oxygen administration
  • Neck and spinal injuries
  • Extrication/stretchers
  • Moving patients (multiple techniques)
  • Scenarios
  • Patient Documentation
  • Safety and awareness using gases in a high pressure cylinder
  • Use of airway maintenance devices and techniques
  • Patient medical assessment will include: pulse oximetry, pupil torch and respiration check, blood pressure and observation skills

Prerequisites

Participants must have current 6402, 6401 & 6400 unit standards and must be a minimum age of 16 years old.
